Debt Relief

Basics Bank

In our modern society it is all too easy to get into debt, but extremely difficult to get out of it. Debt is rarely cancelled. For some people on low incomes the ability to get out of debt can become an almost impossible task. Part of our vision is to reach out into the community and get alongside the needy of our own town.
Shrewsbury Basics Bank seeks to do just that. By setting up a "Bank" containing basic consumer items, we aim to get people out of debt.

How does it work?

Shrewsbury Basics Bank will provide a regular supply of basic consumer items each week, to enable a similar amount to be paid off an individual's debts. We will negotiate with creditors sensible weekly amounts to be paid off. Providing proof is supplied that regular payments are being made to these creditors, a similar amount of goods will be supplied to the individual free of charge.

We work closely with local government agencies and other community groups providing assistance in this area.  Most of our clients come directly as referrals from other agencies, although this is not compulsory.

What else will we do?
We aim to help people manage their finances by regular reviews. Volunteers will be available to individuals when they visit the Basics Bank, giving them opportunity to talk over any concerns they may have.

Can I help?
YES! By supporting us with cash or regular donations of items from the list below: Household cleaning materials, toilet rolls; Food in tins or packets; Shampoo, toothpaste, soap. Please note that items should be regular sizes and, by law, we cannot use date expired items.

How to contact us...
If you have any questions then we'd be happy to talk to you. Please contact David Elkes for specific information. Alternatively the Basics Bank is open on Tuesdays at the Barnabas centre by prior appointment.
